AD-HOC
Active and Determined Hanson Oversight Committee
ah-hoc is a public-interest group working to reduce pollution in the western part of Santa Clara (Silicon) Valley. We are focused on the Hanson strip mine and cement factory, since they are the largest point source of air pollution in the county. Their 2007 plans to triple in size motivated the formation of this group.

Our Goals for Hanson Cement
  • No Mining or Storage or Other Activities Closer to our Neighborhoods (No Pit #2, No East Materials Storage Area)
  • Reduce Existing Negative Impacts (Air, Water, Quarrying, Dust, Noise, Trucks)
Upcoming Events
  • EIR to be completed in October/November 2007.

UPDATE: As of Dec. 2007 the EIR is postponed: "Connolly said that the environmental impact report required to approve the amendment is held up indefinitely until Hanson applies for a county planning commission hearing to determine whether the company has a vested right to mine without a permit in the proposed Advertisement new pit, as it claims."

  • Completion of EIR after potential EIR modification based upon our review of it and subsequent iterations : early 2008

Background Info
Do we really want a significant increase in the currently damaging levels of air pollution, ground water pollution, and polluting big-rig diesel truck traffic through our community? Cement plant pollution has been linked to many forms of cancer, , as well as neurological disorders, learning disabilities, and cardiovascular problems.

Foreign-owned Coal-burning Hanson (formerly Kaiser) Permanente has a long record of extensive pollution. Two examples: according to a report in the Cupertino Courier they are out of compliance with their permit for the existing strip mine quarry, and have violated their air pollution permit actually putting out two times the amount of Sulfur Dioxide as they reported (Notice of Violation # A09397).

  • The first public meeting with Santa Clara County and Hanson (Kaiser) officials was held on Wed. June 20 2007 at 4:00.pm
Despite efforts to keep it secret is was attended by over 50 Cupertino residents. If you missed it, read about what happened here.
